Gcina Mhlophe & Kalle Becker

This is the Xhosa edition

32 pages; hardcover; colour; 210 x 297mm;

“Chameleon, you’re so ugly that you’re a disgrace to us all!” is the continual cry of the river community.

Over time, Chameleon comes to believe their cruel words.  Lonely and hopeless, he dreads the dawning of every new day.  But fate intervenes and he meets a lark and an old man who set in motion events that transform him. The insecurity of the Chameleon and the unkind behaviour of the river community will strike a chord with both young and old.

Chameleon’s well-deserved triumph at the end of the story is a welcome surprise – his belief in himself is restored and his song will touch the hearts of many and his spirit, inspire many more.

The Singing Chameleon is an inspirational and compelling retelling of a Malawian tale by internationally respected author and storyteller, Gcina Mhlophe, with bright and bold illustrations by well-known artist, Kalle Becker.

Also available in Afrikaans, Sesotho, Xhosa and Zulu.

Age: 4 – 9 years

Publication date: March 2008

“I love telling this story to live audiences, watching their reaction and hearing how they interpret it in their own way each time.” Gcina Mhlophe

Gcina Mhlophe is South Africa’s most famous story teller.  Gcina has won numerous awards, and numerous hearts, small and large, with her vibrant and inventive story telling.

Kalle Becker was born in Goettingen, Germany.  In his capacity as freelance artist and illustrator of children’s books, he and Gcina have collaborated on previous titles, such as Fudukazi’s Magic and Stories of Africa.

“Anyone who has heard storyteller Gcina Mhlophe in action will know that she uses – as the best African storytellers do – an enchanting mixture of words and movement and song. This traditional tale from Malawi is rich with action and emotion.” - Bookchat
