112pp; paperback; 250 x 200mm; ISBN 9780796035028

In the last half century, Africa has produced twenty Nobel Laureates in the categories of Peace, Physiology or Medicine, Chemistry and Literature.  Ironically, on a continent that is often depicted as ravaged by war, the majority of the winners have been associated with a plea for peace and respect for human dignity.

Africa’s Laureates started out as ordinary people yet each of them produced remarkable results in their respective fields. Where there were obstacles, they found opportunities; where people said it could not be done, they achieved it and where there was despair, they spread hope. African Gold provides us with a unique opportunity to bask in the reflected glory of some of Africa’s greatest sons and daughters.

African Gold Laureates included (in chronological order):  Max Theiler, Albert Camus, Albert Luthuli, Anwar al-Sadat, Desmond Tutu, Claude Simon, Wole Soyinka, Naguib Mahfouz, Nadine Gordimer, Nelson Mandela, FW De Klerk, Yassar Arafat, Claude Cohen-Tannoudji, Ahmed H Zewail, Kofi Annan, Sydney Brenner, JM Coetzee, Wangari Maathai, Mohamed Elbaradei.

Sue Heese qualified as a teacher but has spent the last ten years as an author and editor. In 2006, she collaborated with Philip Harrison to produce the unique and comprehensive travel guide, South Africa’s Top Sites for Families. Researching and writing African Gold has allowed Sue to pursue her interest in modern African social history.
