What type of books does SHUTER publish and NOT publish?
We publish both fiction and non-fiction for adults and young adults. Unfortunately at the moment we do not publish poetry or play scripts and we publish only in English. Apart from these limitations, we are interested in publishing any good fiction and non-fiction for adults and young adults.
What type of books does SONGOLOLO publish and NOT publish?
We publish both picture books and children’s fiction, mainly in English, Afrikaans, Zulu, Xhosa and Sesotho. We do not publish information books or readers for children.
What should my submission consist of?
- Children’s Picture Books: In addition to the manuscript, please also include the following in English - a synopsis of about 80 words; the total number of words in the manuscript; a description of your intended target market and a short author biography. (If you have been published before, please provide details of your publications.) It is not necessary to submit any illustrations but if they have already been completed, please submit these as well as a short illustrator biography. If you are submitting in a language other than English, please provide an English translation of the text. (This translation does not need to be a professional one.)
- Fiction (for children, young adults or adults): In addition to the manuscript, please also include the following - a synopsis of about 200 words; the total number of words in the manuscript; a description of your intended target market and a short author biography. (If you have been published before, please provide details of your publications.) Unfortunately, we only accept submissions in English.
- Non-fiction (for young adults or adults): In addition to the manuscript, please also include the following - a synopsis of about 200 words; the total number of words in the manuscript; a description of your intended target market; a description or list of the photographic and/or illustrative material that would be necessary (if applicable) and a short author biography. (If you have been published before, please provide details of your publications.)
- Proposals: If your submission is a proposal, please provide the following - a synopsis of about 200 words; a description of your intended target market; an outline of the photographic and/or illustrative material that would be necessary (if applicable); at least one chapter and a short author biography. (If you have been published before, please provide details of your publications.) How should I format my manuscript?
- We do not accept handwritten manuscripts.
- Your manuscript needs to be typed in a 12-point font using 1.5 or double line spacing as this makes it easier to read. • Please print or photocopy your manuscript on white paper, on one side only.
- Please do not send original copies of your manuscript, documents or illustrative and photographic material as we cannot accept responsibility for their safe return.
Should I email my manuscript or send a hardcopy?
We prefer hard copy submissions. If you wish your submission to be returned to you, please include a stamped, self-addressed envelope.
How will I know that my manuscript has been received?
If you supply an email address, we will acknowledge receipt of your manuscript by email.
How long will it take to get a response to my manuscript?
We receive high volumes of material for publication and so we respectfully ask that you wait 6 months before following up on the progress with the evaluation of your manuscript. On average it takes between 6 and 9 months for us to provide a response to a submission.
